THE Indian Association (IA) of Penang failed to secure a double finish at the 8th Indian Association Penang Alex Stewart International Soccer Sevens tournament at the Polo Ground in George Town.
They won the Masters Category, beating Krish FC of Perak 2-0 in the final.
However, their attempt to complete a double in the Veterans Category ended in the semi-final, losing 3-5 to eventual champion Lion Forever of Perak on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time.
Last year, they emerged winners in both categories.
IA of Penang’s vice-president cum sports chairman Dr Kalaikumar Nachi said they missed the services of the late Aziz Azizan, who passed away early this year.
“Nevertheless, we must take nothing away from the entire team. They stay unbeaten, right from the preliminaries till the final.
“The victory is special, purely because it coincided with the re-opening of our old clubhouse which was given a facelift recently,” he said.
In the final, the hardworking G. Shamugam gave IA of Penang the lead in the first half by firing home a penalty.
Roshadi Zainal registered the second goal with just eight minutes to play. IA of Penang took home RM2,000 for the victory.
In the Veterans Category, Lions Forever edged Indian Recreation Club of Negri Sembilan 3-2 in the final.
