AN upcoming futsal festival is set to revolutionise the landscape of how the game’s tournaments are hosted and executed in Malaysia through a fully digital approach.

Pesta Futsal Rakyat 2019-Piala Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is set to feature an entirely app-based registration process via organiser Futsal.Asia’s “Tournamentor” mobile application, providing users and players with real-time updates of competition results and standings.

Each team will be assigned a QR code and each player will be issued a radio frequency identification (RFID) wristband.

It is equipped with the player’s profile and keeps track of their attendance and movement in and out of pitches.

The tournament is scheduled to travel across four key zones in Peninsular Malaysia – Pahang, Kedah, Selangor and Johor – with the Under-12, Under-16, Men’s Open and Women’s Open competition categories.

The tournament begins this weekend in Kuantan, Pahang and moves to Alor Star, Kedah on July 19 and 20, Subang Jaya, Selangor on Aug 3 and 4, and Johor Baru, Johor on Aug 16 and 17. The finals will be held on Sept 1 in Bangi, Selangor.

With more than RM200,000 in cash and prizes to be won, the two-month tournament – sponsored by MyEG and supported by the Youth and Sports Ministry – is expected to attract 10,000 participants and fans.

“Sporting events such as this are an excellent way to promote sports like futsal, and at the same time, shine a light on potential new talents,” said MyEG Services Berhad executive director Datuk Raja Munir Shah Raja Mustapha.

“At MyEG, we are happy to lend our support in encouraging sportsmanship, which in turn will create potential young leaders who can contribute positively to society.“

Futsal.Asia executive director Pravinn Nair said it was time sports such as futsal, freestyle football and eSports get the recognition they deserve.

“Despite being widely popular, these categories are under-represented in mainstream media,” he said.

“We hope that through this tournament, we can help boost awareness in Malaysia, while bringing people together for a two month-long footy fiesta.”
