Folger will start from the Petronas Sprinta Racing paddock in this weekend’s Catalan Grand Prix.

THE Petronas Sprinta Racing Moto2 team have now called German rider Jonas Folger to stand in for the injured Khairul Idham Pawi for the next three rounds of the World Championships.

As Khairul, 20, is recovering from a fracture in his finger sustained during the Spanish Grand Prix (GP) early last month, the team brought in Mattia Pasini as a substitute to race in the Le Mans (France) and Mugello (Italy) GPs.

But the Italian broke his collar-bone in a motocross accident following the Italian GP on June 2, forcing the Malaysian outfit to call up the 25-year-old German as the latest replacement.

Folger, who has 11 podium finishes in the Moto2 and one in MotoGP, will start from the Petronas Sprinta Racing paddock in the upcoming Catalan Grand Prix from June 14 to 16, Dutch GP and his home race at the Sachsenring.

He has an impressive track record in Grand Prix racing, winning five races and taking 24 podiums in total, including three wins in the middleweight class.

“I can’t wait to get back on a bike. Petronas Sprinta Racing are an exceptionally professional team in all three categories and I know some of the crew in the Moto2 squad from the past.

“I am looking forward to working with them again, especially as I have some good friends there. I have positive memories of Barcelona as I have been on the podium and put in some fast laps there in the past.

“It’s actually one of my favourite tracks and it suits my riding style well,” Folger said.

Meanwhile, team principal Datuk Razlan Razali said it was a fabulous opportunity for the team to engage a rider of Folger’s calibre and he was confident that the experience of Folger in MotoGP would bring the team good rewards.

“He will bring an extra element to the team and help push our Moto2 programme along in anticipation of Khairul’s return later this season. We want the team to be as strong as possible for Khairul’s return as he has the best potential for a Malaysian rider in Moto2.

“We are working closely with Khairul to ensure he returns to action at the right time,” he said.
