OCM officials with representatives and sponsors for the Penang Olympic Carnival.

A MEDLEY of sports and events will be held during the Penang Olympic Carnival from June 12 to 23.

The carnival will feature sports like badminton, sepak takraw, tenpin bowling and volleyball, along with a family fun walk.

The walk will be held on June 23, on the last day of the carnival, before the closing ceremony.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary-general Datuk Mohd Nazifuddin Najib said the carnival was a celebration held in conjunction with the Tokyo Olympics.

“This is the first time we are doing a carnival concept for the Olympics in Malaysia with official Olympics sports like volleyball and badminton.

“The participation rate in the sports and fun walk for the carnival is very encouraging so far and we hope the Penang government will continue to support events like these in future,” he said at a press conference at Vouk Hotel in George Town.

State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee said the four sports, namely badminton, sepak takraw, tenpin bowling and volleyball, will have 2,054 participants while the walk has received over 7,000 registrations.

“As we have received a good number of participants for the walk, we have decided to reopen the registration from now until June 10 for another 1,000 participants,” he said.

Those interested in taking part in the walk can contact the Penang Sports Council at 04-659 3713, 04-659 3714 or 04-659 3715.

The family fun walk will see participants taking a 5km walk through Lebuh Light, Lebuh Leith, Penang Road, Lebuh Campbell, Lebuh Buckingham, Lebuh Acheh and Beach Street, before heading back to Lebuh Light.

The event will be flagged off by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and Soon at the Esplanade at 5.30pm.

The closing ceremony for the carnival will be held at 7pm at the Esplanade, with an array of programmes for the public.

Soon said the programmes will include games demonstrations like woodball, table tennis, skateboard and mini Olympics sports like football, handball and athletics.

“We will also be witnessing a torch run by Youth Olympic Games badminton champion Goh Jin Wei, and have lucky draw sessions, stage shows and food trucks,” he said.
