IT WAS sweet revenge for AmBank Group during a friendly badminton match against Star Media Group’s StarSports team at the Sentosa Sports Arena in Kuala Lumpur.
AmBank fought hard to pull off a 3-2 win in a tie that went down to the wire to make up for their defeat two years ago.
In 2017, the StarSports team won 3-2.
The recent friendly comprised five events – three Men’s Doubles, one Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.
Group Corporate Communications and Marketing Department senior vice-president Syed Anuar Syed Ali led the AmBank team while StarSports editor Rajes Paul headed the media team.
Both teams were focused on court, but off court, there was lots of fun, much laughter and good fellowship.
It was the StarSports team who got off to a flying start when Kamarul Ariffin-Gan Fock Yong defeated Syed Anuar-Mustafa Kamal for the first point in the Men’s Doubles.
Then, Azmah Abidin-Lai Sook Yee extended StarSports’ lead by beating Amalina Rashid-Ruzaimey Leyza in the Women’s Doubles.
But a fired up AmBank were quick to equal the score by winning the remaining two Men’s Doubles matches through Ryan Tan Hwee Kian-Keith Ng and Nurhafis Mohamad-Mohammad Noor Hisyam, who defeated Hafeez Aminuddin-Niuh Jit Eng and Rashvinjeet S. Bedi- Joash Ee De Silva, respectively.
In the decider, AmBank’s mixed doubles pair Ling Ee Wei-Siti Zafira Zainuddin fought hard to edge Hafeez-Suryati Mohd Noor.
The others in AmBank’s team were Ling Ee Wei, Heida Hew, Wallace Wang, Ho Vye Tsen, Alvin Chong, Ngiam Tee Wei, P. Jeevanaraj, Khairul Amri, Somesh Naidu and Kartini Mohd Miswan while the others in the StarSports team were Tan Ming Wai, Aftar Singh, T. Avineshwaran, Chow How Ban and Sylvia Ng.
For Syed Anuar, the friendly match was all about sportsmanship and team camaraderie.
“We are pleased to organise this event as it strengthens our relationship with the media team,” he said.
“It enabled us to make new friends in a friendly and sporting environment. It’s not just about the competition, although we are happy to win, but it’s more of friendship and camaraderie between us and our media friend and partner.”
“We hope to organise more such events to keep this tradition going. But maybe it’s time to have a friendly duel in the bowling lanes,” added Syed Anuar.
But Syed Anuar can rest assured that if the bowling competition takes place, the StarSports team will be out to bowl them over!
