Bringing out the Ironman in you

The original finishers of the first Ironman triathlon in 1978. (Right) Defending champion Riesler won the women’s title for the fourth time in a row at last year’s edition of Ironman Langkawi.

WHEN former United States Navy Commander John Collins had a debate with his friends if cyclists, swimmers or runners were the most accomplished athletes, little did he know he would be the founder of a fitness revolution called the Ironman, founded some 40 years ago.

Often described as the epitome of fitness and endurance, athletes in Ironman events push their limits with a 2.4 mile (3.86km) swim, followed by cycling for 112 miles (180km), before finishing off with a 26.2-mile run (42km).
