SMASH Masters badminton team continue to prove their mettle by thrashing their opponent with a perfect 9-0 score in the Mixed Team Open 60-64 Years Old Category event during the Asia Pacific Masters Games (APMG).

The team comprised local seasoned veteran players Chan Wan Seong, Ong Then Lin, Tan Phick Eng, Victor Sim from Singapore and four women players from China namely, Guo Meiqin, Zhao Hua Liang, Xu Weiqing and Xu Yanping.

They won all three men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles respectively.

Chan, who is the team captain said most of his players played two to three events each against other multi-national teams.

“The competition was intense with some of our matches going to three sets.

“Unbelievably, we won all our matches which resulted in the 9-0 score.

“Our team is well-balanced and has strength-in-depth thanks to the women players from China whose fighting spirit is admirable,” he said.

Local veteran shuttlers in the team included Peter Leong, Ching Kon Kong, Datuk Venugopal Menon and Ong Sin Oong and Lim Yow Sang who also contributed to the medal count.

Leong took home three gold medals in the Open Men’s Singles 75-79 Years Old category as well as Men’s Doubles 70-74 years old category and Men’s Team Open 75-79 Years Old category partnering Chin in both the doubles matches.

Venugopal won a bronze medal in Men’s Singles 75-79 years old category while badminton doubles Ong Sin Oong and Lim won gold in the Open Mixed Doubles 65-69 Years Old Category event.

Besides winning Gold in the Mixed Team Open 60-65 years old category, Then Lin also won a gold medal in the Mixed Doubles Open 60-64 Years Old Category, a silver medal in Men’s Singles 60-65 Years Old Category and Men’s Doubles 60-65 Years Old Category each, partnering Chan.

Chan said the results achieved by senior players in the APMG was a continuation of the consistent performances of their players at world-level senior badminton tournaments.

“These players are strong contenders to win medals in such tournaments for the country,” he said.

The veteran shuttlers including Chan, Ong Sin Oong, Datuk Irwan Shah Abdullah and Ong Then Lin will be competing in both the World Chinese Badminton Championships in Chengdu, China from Nov 1 to 4, followed by the Sawasdee Cup in Pattaya, Thailand from Nov 31 to Dec 2.
