THE Prudential Astro Masters qualifiers in Southern Malaysia, yet again featured top quality golf and a closely fought competition that saw another four players book their tickets to the grand final in Cambodia.
Seven handicapper George Wee and Choo Tze Chin (12 hcp) emerged with the gross and nett honours at Horizon Hill Golf and Country Club in Johor Bahru, while Abu Samah Kechil (4) and Mohd Hairull Sauren won the equivalent at Orna Golf and Country Club in Melaka.
The quartet will be playing in the grand final in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh in November.
Wee shot a four-over 76 to capture the gross title at the Ross Watson-designed Horizon Hills, while Choo claimed the nett title on countback with a round of 76.
In the A Medal, 10-handicapper Zarafi Peais shot a nett 69 to top the leaderboard, while Khairulnizam Othman (15) clinched the B Medal with a 67. The C Medal title went to Muhammad Fazly Yahya, who palyed off a 16 handicap and won on countback with 67 Nett.
Normiza Shahman won the Nearest-to-Line prize at the 320-metre par-4 4 th hole after he knocked his ball onto the line.
C Medal winner Muhammad Fazly also took the Longest Drive honours after he blasted his drive 269 metres down the fairway.
The Panasonic LED Full HD TV prize at the Sure-to-Win hole went to Kasran Terubos. He left his tee shot at the par-3, 12th hole just two feet from the flag stick.
While at the Orna qualifier, Abu Samah and Senin Bin Rahman both shot 3-over-par 75s and left the gross winner to be determined on countback. Abu Samah won it by virtue of a better back nine when he signed for a 38.
“I am very happy to qualify for the grand final in Phnom Penh. I didn’t expect to win it, but I think my local knowledge of Orna helped me put together a solid round,” said Abu Samah.
Nett champion Hairull Sauren played off a 17 handicap and finished with a nett 67. The battle for the A Medal title was the closest of all after the top three on the leader board all signed for 69s.
And after a countback, eight-handicapper Md Saffian Othman won it and left Zaidi Johari (10) and Sarpan Sapari (11) to settle for second and third place.
Kasran Terubos (14) won the B Medal category with a 70 and 23-handicapper Azli Norali claimed the C Medal title with a 67.
The Nearest-to-Line hole prize went A. Rahman Ismail and the Longest Drive honours to Abdul Mutalib Shafie, who matched the tournament record of 270m.
Sazali Kadlan won the Sure-to-Win prize when his tee shot was measured at five feet and two inches from the cup.
The grand final will be held at the Grand Phnom Golf Club and Garden City Golf Club for the winners of the gross and nett champions of the qualifiers.
