THE second IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge saw 6,000 runners pace themselves through the Besraya Highway.
Similar to last year’s edition, the event offered a 13km challenge and a 6km fun run that went along the stretch of the elevated highway.
The run kicked off at 6.30am and 7am for the 13km and 6km runs respectively at the Loke Yew toll plaza, taking participants all the way to Pandan Indah, Jalan Istana and Salak Selatan before turning back to the toll plaza.
The total stretch of the highway is nearly 29km, which offers connectivity between UPM Serdang, Balakong, Salak Selatan, Ampang and Jalan Istana.
The event was held in collaboration with IJM Corporation Bhd and Allianz Malaysia Bhd as title sponsors and organised by Besraya (M) Sdn Bhd, New Pantai Expressway Sdn Bhd (NPE) – under IJM’s toll division – and EC Pixels.
The highway was fully closed with extra precautions taken to ensure the participants had a safe and enjoyable run.
The supporters and finishers also took part in activities at the Race Village which included various strength challenges and photo booths organised by IJM.
They also learned about safety hazards at home and on the road.
IJM chief executive officer and managing director Datuk Soam Heng Choon said: “We are pleased to be back at the Besraya Highway Challenge.
“Following the success of the series last year, we hope to continue our efforts in promoting healthy urban lifestyles through running, as well as providing a safe and well-organised venue for sports enthusiasts of all levels.
“The safety of participants is our main priority as we want them to enjoy running through a fully closed highway.”
Meanwhile, Allianz chief operations officer Sean Wang said: “Since 2011, Allianz Malaysia has supported numerous running events to advocate the importance of healthy living. We are truly proud to be the joint title sponsors for the second consecutive year.
“This is one of the competitions that doesn’t fail to ignite excitement. And this year’s race was nothing short of that. We congratulate all the top finishers and look forward to seeing them return with renewed passion at the second leg at the NPE Highway Challenge in July.”
The best Malaysian timing in the Men’s Open 13km category went to Poo Vasanthan Subramaniam, who finished in 45 minutes and 49 seconds.
