SIBU: A total of 260 archers will compete at the 19th Sarawak Outdoor Archery Championship scheduled for March 16 to 20 at SMK Sacred Heart.
This year’s championship is jointly organised by Sibu Division Archery Association and Sarawak Archery Association.
Sibu Division Archery Association president Tiong Kiong King told a press conference that the championship had attracted archers from Melaka, Perlis, Penang, Johor, Perak, Lawas, Limbang, Kuching, Sarikei, Kapit, Miri and even from Saudi Arabia.
He said the first time the championship was held in this town was in 2009.
Assistant Youth and Sport Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan will launch the championship at 2.30pm on March 16 while Tiong will officiate at the closing ceremony on March 20.
“The number of participants this time has exceeded our expectation.
“A total of 40 coaches from Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Sabah, Johor and archery clubs in the state are also involved in the championship, “ he said.
He said the championship would provide a good warm-up opportunity for archers in the country, especially for those who would be taking part in the Malaysia Games in September in Perak.
“The competition not only provides fun and enjoyment but can also promote friendship and tourism.
“We hope that archery associations in the region will also hold competitions for the young and old to participate.”
