BALIK Pulau's Wira Hockey Club won its second title of the year by grabbing the TNB-Penang State Hockey Association (TNB-PSHA) Under-12 hockey league crown.
They edged SK Bagan Ajam’s Wooden Tigers 3-2 in a keenly contested final at the Universiti Sains Malaysia hockey stadium in Penang.
Last month, the promising talents, known as Batu Feringgi Titans then, won the inaugural Dharma Management Consultant -Wellesley Junior Hockey Carnival.
They thrashed Balik Pulau outfit Kongsi ‘A’ 5-0 to win the Under-12 category.
Wira Hockey Club chief coach Azwira Abu said the latest victory was a boost for the players as they get ready to defend their title at the USM Pesta Hockey Tournament.
“I feel proud of them and believe they can become professional players in the future.
“I am confident that with the right encouragement and development, the boys will do well,” he said.
Fifteen teams took part in the TNB-PSHA Under-12 hockey league challenge which began in October.
Wira Hockey Club’s victory certainly did not come easy.
Although they took a 3-0 lead at half-time through a brace from Kalvinderjit Singh with Mohd Azril Haziq adding the third, Wooden Tigers refused to throw in the towel.
They fought their way back with Tengku Adam helping himself to a brace as well.
However, with their second goal coming right at the end of the game, their comeback was too late.
The Under-12 challenge is a brain child of PSHA secretary V. Jayanandhan, who said the response was encouraging.
"I am delighted that we managed to lure primary schools and club outfits to the competition.
"Some schools could not field a team in our league but some of their young talents turned up for the clubs.
"Now we have a bigger pool of talents to choose from,” he said.
