The Batu Feringgi Titans jumping for joy after being crowned champs in the DMC-Wellesley Junior Hockey Carnival at the Penang Sports Club.

THE Batu Feringgi Titans were too mighty for their competitors in the inaugural Dharma Management Consultant (DMC)-Wellesley Junior Hockey Carnival.

They thrashed Balik Pulau outfit Kongsi ‘A’ 5-0 in the Under-12 category final at the Penang Sports Club.

This was their best performance in the one-day competition which drew 10 teams.

Previously in the preliminary round and semi-final, the team were content to coast along with 2-0 wins.

Chief coach Azwira Abu said the victory was a perfect warm-up to their title defence in the 44th Pesta Hoki organised by Universiti Sains Malaysia next month.

“Frankly, I am not surprised by our win.

“Judging from our good performance, I am confident we are on the right track to defend our title at the Pesta Hoki competition,” he said.

Azwira said five of his players had donned state colours in their respective age groups.

The quintet were moving like a well-oiled machine for Batu Feringgi Titans throughout the competition.

The Under-9 challenge featured four teams from the Wellesley Primary School.

Tuah were crowned champion after securing 12 points from four straight wins.

Lekir took the runner-up spot with four points followed by Jebat and Lekiu in joint third spot with a point each.

Carnival organising chairman N. Dharmasegaran said they were targeting 18 teams for the inaugural challenge but several teams pulled out in the last minute.

He said the Under-12 category was played on a half-field while the four teams taking part in the Under-9 category played their matches on a mini hockey pitch.

“The carnival is a success with 14 teams in the fray.

"What pleases me the most is that both the Inter-Schools tournaments at state and national levels will be adopting the half-field format for the annual showdown.

“Thus, this competition served as a good training platform.

“The players involved here will play in the state and national level tournaments next year,” he said.
