Joel can grin from ear to ear

Tactically sound: Sabah’s Joel Evekly (red) lands a punch on Johor’s Sharol Nizam Norsukeri during their bout. — KAMARUL ARIFFIN/The Star

A COMBINATION of imagination and tactics proved the charm for Sabah boxer Joel Evekly as he outpointed a more fancied Sharol Nizam Norsukeri of Johor for the men’s bantamweight (51-54kg) gold in the Malaysia Games (Sukma).

The 19-year-old had to deal with a boisterous Johorean crowd at the Malaysia Futsal Complex in Putrajaya and their deafening cheers for Sharol were a major distraction for the underdog.
