PETALING JAYA: Bowler Shaqeem Izwan Teh Shahrul Hafiz Teh took home some important lessons from the recent World Junior Championships in Helsingborg, Sweden.
And one that will stand him in good stead for his next assignment is the capacity to cope with the pressure when it gets intense.
A calmer Shaqeem now hopes to give a stellar performance in the Asian Junior Championships at the Blu-O Rhythm and Bowl Ratchayoth in Bangkok, Thailand, from Aug 14-20.
Shaqeem is one of the four junior bowlers selected for the tournament. The others are Syabil Azam Syamsul Azam, Airel Amri Suhaimi and Izz Naquiddin Putera Islahuddin.
Shaqeem said the experience in Sweden gave him much food for thought, especially winning the mixed team bronze.
“I learned to deal with the pressure and not let it affect my game,” said the 18-year-old Shaqeem.
“I’m also trying to improve my spare percentage and accuracy because when I’m nervous or under pressure, I can make certain mistakes.”
Shaqeem hopes to win at least one gold in Bangkok to show that he is progressing well and boost his chances of making the national elite team one day.
“I’m targeting the gold in the team event because I think our good teamwork can get us there.”
Meanwhile, the girls’ team in Bangkok comprise Anis Hannani Romzi, Nurul Anis Nabila Mohd Nizam, Nur Aqila Aini Mohammed Faiz Ahmed and Adania Mohd Redzwan.
The teams will be handled by former national bowlers Alex Liew and Azidi Ameran.
