PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) are hoping to take full advantage of the RM10mil assistance from the Youth and Sports Ministry to help boost their development and profile.

On Wednesday, the Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican unveiled the stimulus package under the “Inisiatif Prihatin Sukan 2020” meant to assist sports organisations affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The government initiative, which benefits all organisations registered under the Sports Commissioner office, is divided into three categories.

A sum of RM2mil has been set aside as a one-off administration grants followed by another RM5mil for programmes and activities and RM3mil for digitalisation and research and development (R&D) purposes.

For MTBC, it is the digitalisation and R&D category, which they could apply a maximum amount of RM30,000, that excites them the most.

The association’s secretary general Maradona Chok said they are planning to start an online database to monitor the bowlers’ performance and a video streaming system.

“We would like to thank the government as this initiative could not have come at a better time, ” he said.

“This will definitely ease our burden in implementing the two projects that we have in the pipeline.

“One of them is to establish an online athletes performance database which would be useful for talent identification.

“This system could help us track bowlers of all ages nationwide from the time they join a club or state programme.

“We can gather a lot of their data.

“For instance, the bowlers’ growth metrics, ranging from height, arm and finger span which can be updated by the coaches every three months.

“We can also track their competitive performance. There’s so many things we can do based on the data.”

MTBC are also hoping to invest in some good quality video equipment to enable them to provide live streaming of domestic competitions to fans.

“Currently we have a partnership with Astro but we would like to expand by having our own in-house service, ” explained Maradona.

“Astro would normally air the finals live but we can really do so much more by broadcasting the preliminaries ourselves.

“This will provide MTBC with the ability to convince more sponsors to invest in the game and give them a better ROI (return of investment).

“It is crucial for us to move forward in this digital age.”
