Gift of love: Timmy (second from left) giving away mandarin oranges to his school teachers in SMK Sultan Abdul Samad.

PETALING JAYA: He is 25. He is Asia’s top bowler and a national sensation. And Timmy Tan’s wish for the Chinese New Year? He wants as much ang pow as possible.

He can expect quite a bit. After all, he is always the life of any party – and the bowling lanes – with his wit and his facial expressions.

The bowler, who is ranked No 1 in the Asian Bowling Federation’s men’s rankings, said his fondest memories of the new year were during his schooldays when he played fireworks with his siblings and went from house to house to collect ang pow.“That’s the best part! Even though everyone has now grown up, I still keep in touch with my primary and secondary school friends and we visit each other during the new year, ” he said.

“I love it when we recall how silly we were during our school says and the whole house was only filled with laughter throughout the day.”

With reunion dinner being the agenda of the day, Timmy said his thoughts were on the Yee Sang, some prayers and most importantly, fireworks to usher the new year.

“Everyone will tossing Yee Sang and shouting ‘Huat ah’! I think that’s the only time everyone puts down their phone, ” said the chirpy Timmy, who will also have his school friends and the national bowling team over.

Asked what would be his perfect celebration, Timmy joked, “The perfect Chinese New Year celebration is to collect as much ang pow as I can.”

“I love it because I get to celebrate a whole 15 days with my family members and friends. Some of my family members are based overseas, so they come back once a year.

Strangely, Timmy has never won an Open title despite being No 1. He has won two golds in the SEA Games gold and also in the Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships, but not an Open.

And he intends to set that in the Year of the Rat.

Timmy said he would work harder to improve his game and win the elusive title.

“I also want to let more people know about my business The Bare Skin. Hopefully one day I will take my parents on a trip around the world when they retire.”
