PETALING JAYA: The men bowlers are certainly making a statement at the 45th Hong Kong International Open.
Tun Ameerul Hakim Tun Hasnul Azam, Ahmad Muaz Fishol and Rafiq Ismail were in imperious form at the SCAA Bowling Centre by occupying the top three spots on the final day of the qualifying round yesterday.
By being the top three qualifiers, they advance automatically to Stage Two Masters Finals scheduled for today.
Tun Hakim was in his element as he shot 1,567 pins from six games in the final qualifying day to finish first. Malaysian Open champion Ahmad Muaz settled for second with 1,511.
Newly-crowned EBT Masters champion and 2018 World Men’s Championships singles gold medallist Rafiq Ismail made up Malaysia’s domination by taking the third spot with 1,481.
World champion Rafiq could be in the running for a third trophy of the year, but the 21-year-old bowler was modest about his chances.
“It feels good to get into the finals. However, it will be a different ball game because those who qualified, will start from scratch. We cannot rely on our qualifying performance to sustain in the Masters,” he said.
“It’s anyone’s game because the lanes will change. The aim is to get into the top six and qualify for the stepladder finals.”
Meanwhile, Nur Syazwani Sahar also made it to the second stage after she topped the women’s table with 1,416 pins from six games.
The Philippines’ Alexis Sy of Philippines was second with 1,397 while Macau’s Veronica De Souza made up the top 3 overseas qualifiers with 1,376.
