Bowling: Double joy for Sarawak with Masters sweep

KANGAR: Sarawak bagged a grand double in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) bowling competition by claiming the men’s and women’s Masters titles at the Perlis Bowl.

National elite bowler Jonathan Ding Sagan, relatively quiet throughout the Sukma competition except for the gold medal in the team event, came good in the men’s Masters by defeating Ahmad Muaz Fishol of Kedah 193-191, 231-198 in the final on Wednesday.

Former national youth squad member Jackelyn Ng, meanwhile, upstaged national elite bowler Radin Nur Najwa Arifah Radin Dzulfakar of the Federal Territories 198-175, 236-188 to win the women’s title.

“I knew this moment would come,” said an elated Jonathan.

Not showing any sign of tiredness after his efforts on the lanes to win the team gold medal, which lasted until 5am the day before, Jonathan said it was a very special win for him.

“It was a very hard day for us. But when you’re bowling well, you don’t feel tired. Plus, it was my birthday (June 3), so this is a perfect birthday gift for me,” said Jonathan.

Meanwhile, Jackelyn kept her calm to win an intense final against Radin.

“I just prayed that I’d be calm during the match and, thankfully, I was. It was not an easy match because there was some pressure at first. But I just ignored it and just played my game,” said the 20-year-old.

Muhd Amirul Che Amat of Kedah won the men’s bronze medal after losing to Jonathan in the semi-final while Steffira Zeandea Greater of Sabah claimed the women’s bronze medal after losing to Jackelyn in the semi-final.
