Bronze from 5x5 cagers

THE Malaysian 5x5 women’s basketball team dug deep into their reserves in their final group game to edge the Philippines 96-93 to take the bronze medal.

It was quite a feat as the side, led by Sze Yuin Foong, had less than a day’s rest before taking on the eventual gold medallists.

Chong Yin Yin starred with 26 points and five steals, as the cagers took the game to their formidable opponents in the second and third quarters.

The Philippines tried to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, but Malaysia held on to their lead.

Malaysia finished third after Vietnam lost to Thailand 75-78 in their final game.

The Philippines had won the gold medal after topping the group ahead of Indonesia.

Team manager San Chyi Her saluted the players for their fighting spirit.

‘’They really fought all the way and made it tight for their tougher opponents. So that’s progress,’’ he said.

‘’The pandemic affected our preparations and if we had a longer time to prepare, we could have done even better.’’

Meanwhile, there was a shock in the men’s action as Indonesia beat the Philippines 85-81, which helped them to top the group and take the gold.

With that, they have broken the Philippines’ domination in the SEA Games as the Gilas Pilipinas have never failed to win the gold ever since the 1991 edition.
