KUALA LUMPUR: Young basketball player Lee Li Xuan (pic) is one to look out for in the future.
After coming off from a long week where she captained NS Matrix to the women’s Under-17 national title two weeks ago, the Negri Sembilan lass has stepped up her game in the 61st Maba/Matrix Agong Cup at the Maba Stadium.
Even though she is playing with a more senior team in the national meet this week, the 17-year-old has put up double figures on the scoreboard and has also been a workhorse in grabbing rebounds.
Her best match was when she single-handedly outscored the opposing team when NS Matrix defeated Putrajaya 62-15 on Friday. Li Xuan scored 17 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in the win.
“It’s been very exhausting. I’ve played so many games two weeks ago and here, I’ve to play another six matches in a week, ” said Li Xuan.
“There is pain all over the body and the only way to keep going is to push myself mentally. “Five of my teammates are injured, so I’ve to spend more minutes on the court but it’s worth it.
“It’s been a good experience.”
She is hoping to impress the selectors to win a spot in the national squad.
“That’s the dream of every player.
“It’s early though to play in this year’s SEA Games squad but definitely next time.”
NS Matrix head coach Tong Huai Yi believes Li Xuan has what it takes to play in the national team one day.
“She is good but she needs to open up other areas of her game. She is also a good shooter but lacks the confidence to take more shots, ” said Huai Yi.
“She is also a capable passer, so if she works on finding and creating more chances for her teammates, she will be a much bigger threat.”
Matrix ended their Agong Cup campaign by finishing fifth in the seven-team standings.Segamat and Negri Sembilan clash in today’s final.
