Kung Fu beat Dragons in Asean Basketball League

PETALING JAYA: The Westports Malaysia Dragons suffered a 79-96 defeat at the hands of the Chong Son Kung Fu Basketball Club in the Asean Basketball League (ABL).

The Dragons, still smarting from an 85-94 defeat to the Singapore Slingers last Sunday (Jan 21), badly needed a win to improve on their seventh place standing in the nine-team league.

But Kung Fu had other plans as they ran wild in the first quarter to lead 26-13 at the Nanhai Gymnasium on Thursday (Jan 25).

The Dragons found their feet in the second quarter, including a 10-0 run as they trooped off at halftime trailing just 44-48.

The home team, however, came out after the break on fire, setting off a 15-0 run to build up a 79-61 lead.

But the Dragons never found their way back into the contest as Kung Fu comfortably finished with an 17-point victory.

Filipino-American point guard Mikh McKinney did the most damage for Kung Fu as he finished with 32 points while Anthony Tucker had a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

For the Dragons, Joshua Munzon led the scoring with 22 points while AJ West had 19. It was a poor outing for starting point guard Marcus Marshall as he shot 2-for-13 from the field to finish with just 11 points.

The Dragons who remain at seventh with a 3-6 record, next travel to Singapore to take on the Slingers on Sunday (Jan 28).
