Melaka off to a solid start in bid to regain Agong Cup

CYBERJAYA: Melaka got off to a winning start in their bid to re-gain the men’s crown at the Agong Cup National Basketball Championships.

Powered by several former internationals, Melaka were simply too strong for Selangor as they cruised to a 93-56 win at the Gem In Mall yesterday.

Melaka, champions in 2013 and 2014, led 47-23 at half-time. They never took their foot off and continued to stamp their mark before finishing with a huge 37-point win.

Captain Chee Li Wei proved that he’s still one of the best centres in the country, scoring 13 points off the bench in just 19 minutes of action.

Five others – Chin Zi Shin and Loh Shee Fai (12 points), Choo Wei Hong (11), Ong Wei Yong and Wong Chin Yong (10) – also finished with double digits.

Gan Teck Hwa was Selangor’s best performer with 14 points while youngster Thea Zhong Shin added 12 points.

Melaka meet 2012 winners Police today while Selangor, who have lost both their matches, are up against Sarawak.

In the women’s event, Sarawak whipped Sabah 81-46.

Pint-sized point guard Wong Mei Chyn was the star for Sarawak as she claimed a triple-double with 25 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists.
