KUALA LUMPUR: Hosts Kuala Lumpur kept alive their hopes of a top-four finish in the men’s Division One of the Agong Cup National Basketball Championships by battling to a 76-68 win over Klang Valley rivals Selangor.

Monday’s win at the Maba Stadium was the second secured by the young and spirited KL team. They were 87-47 winners over Penang in their opening match last Friday, but suffered a 50-57 defeat to Sarawak in their second game.

Against Selangor, Keng Eng Hong led the way with 25 points. Izran Edika Kamaruddin also made a strong contribution with 18 points.

KL, however, need to avoid huge defeats against favourites Malacca and Police in their final two matches to pip Sarawak to a third-place finish.

In the women’s category, Division One champions Johor were made to slog by Malacca before triumphing 62-43 for their third win.

Low Bee Chuan and R. Kalaimathi both came off the bench to score 12 and 11 points respectively while Yong Shin Min responded for Malacca with 13 points.
