KUALA LUMPUR: A day after huffing and puffing their way past Selangor, former champions Police were back in the groove as they stormed to an 85-59 win over Penang in the Agong Cup National Basketball Championships at the Maba Stadium.
The 2012 champions, who were runners-up to Malacca last year, struggled to beat Selangor 59-53 in their first match on Friday.
But on Saturday they went on the offensive right from the start against Penang to take a 19-16 lead at the first quarter before leading 41-36 at half time.
Penang crumbled after the break as Police upped the tempo.
Experienced point guard Ooi Ban Sin, who played for the Westports Malaysia Dragons in the Asean Basketball League (ABL), topped the scoring for Police with 20 points.
Choo Wei Hong and Soo Eng Heng contributed 16 points and 12 points respectively while centre Koh Way Teck racked up 10 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Ooi Cherng Liang top scored for Penang with 20 points while Loh Kim Eng added 12 points.
Malacca, powered by several experienced current and former national players, are still the team to beat, having opened their account on Friday with an 88-38 thrashing of Sarawak.
