Heartache: Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing struggled against Turkiye’s Bengisu Ercetin-Nazlican Inci in the Hylo Open quarter-final match.
PETALING JAYA: Women’s doubles shuttler Go Pei Kee suffered a blow after she was forced to retire in the quarter-finals of the Hylo Open along with Teoh Mei Xing due to injury.
Pei Kee, who pulled out of the French Open last week with Mei Xing after spraining her ankle, tried to fight through and play on in the Hylo tourney but struggled in the match against Turkiye’s Bengisu Ercetin-Nazlican Inci and had to throw in the towel while trailing 13-21, 13-14 at the Saarlandhalle in Saarbrucken, Germany, yesterday.
The injury blow comes as a worry for Pei Kee, who now could be a doubt for the SEA Games from Dec 9-20 in Thailand.
The pair have been named in the team along with national No. 1 and world No. 2 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah.
Pei Kee will be hoping that the injury is not too serious and she will be able to recover in time and compete in the biennial Games with Mei Xing.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s challenge in the women’s doubles in Germany came to an end after youngsters Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting went down 17-21, 16-21 to Taiwan’s world No. 18 Hsu Yin-hui-Lin Jhih-yun.
Despite the defeat, the world No. 34 pair enjoyed a breakthrough after making it into the last eight of a World Tour Super 500 competition for the first time.
Xin Yee-Carmen, who are both only 19-years-old, showed glimpses of their potential and will be keen to build on their encouraging outing in future tournaments.
