BWF hands Persson four-year suspension over betting offence

PETALING JAYA: Former Danish shuttler Joachim Persson has landed in trouble again after being slapped with a four-year suspension by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) for betting on badminton matches.

The BWF said in a statement on Tuesday (Oct 28) that the sanction was imposed following a decision by its Independent Hearing Panel (IHP), which found Persson guilty of breaching the BWF Code on the Prevention of the Manipulation of Competitions and the Judicial Procedures.

"This is Persson’s second suspension. The decision was not appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The reasoned decision can be found on the BWF website.

"Through its Integrity Unit, the BWF remains steadfast in its commitment to combating the risks associated with betting in badminton, providing a fair and secure environment for all athletes," said BWF in a statement.

Investigations revealed that the 42-year-old had placed bets on a live match during the Japan Open 2024 using his mobile phone.

The BWF had requested Persson to submit his betting records and made several attempts to reach him through Badminton Denmark and his former lawyer, but he failed to respond.

This marks Persson’s second disciplinary action. He was previously banned for 18 months and fined US$4,500 (RM18,888) for four breaches related to betting, wagering and irregular match results.
