Justin says back-up squad can still punch above weight at Asia mixed meet

KUALA LUMPUR: There are mixed reactions to the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) decision to field back-up squad for the Asia Mixed Team Championship in Qingdao, China, from Feb 11 to 16.

But Justin Hoh believes the team selected are no less formidable.

In fact, debutant Justin is confident they can still put up a strong fight against Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Kazakhstan in their Group B matches.

“I’ve heard mixed reactions, but I believe BAM have their own reasoning. As players, we just need to follow their plan and give our best,” said Justin.

The governing body have opted to rest several key players, including Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah and Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, while also excluding professional shuttlers such as Lee Zii Jia and the world No. 2 men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani.

While some have backed the move, others have raised questions about the rationale behind the selection.

Justin said he did not expect to be selected as there were other players who are more accomplished than him.

As such, he is determined to make the most of this opportunity and will give his best to contribute points for the team if given the chance to play.

Apart from Justin, another men’s singles player selected to don the national jersey is Leong Jun Hao.

“I’m really grateful that BAM have given me this opportunity, and I hope I can repay their trust,” he said.

“I’m not thinking too far ahead because, to me, we are all one team. Win or lose, we stand as a team. Whether or not I get to play, I’ll leave that decision to the coaches,” said Justin.

Justin is no stranger to team events.

In last year’s Thomas Cup Group D match against Denmark, he was the final player fielded by Malaysia, going up against Rasmus Gemke.

Despite losing and being unable to secure the winning point for the team, Justin caught the eye with his spirited performance, pushing Gemke to a hard-fought rubber game.

“This is my first time, so I can’t comment much, but I believe this team will give their best in every match.

“I do have some experience from playing in the Thomas Cup, especially going up against Gemke. I hope I can deliver a similar performance at the Asia meet,” he added.
