Haikal-Hon Jian out of Malaysian Open due to injury

PETALING JAYA: Men's doubles shuttlers Mohd Haikal Nazri-Choong Hon Jian's hopes of making their debuts in the Malaysian Open from Jan 7-12 in Bukit Jalil were dashed after the former suffered a hip injury.

Men's doubles coach Tan Bin Shen confirmed that Haikal and Hon Jian would miss the tournament.

"Haikal tore his muscle in his hip in training and will miss the Malaysian Open," said Bin Shen after overseeing a training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara on Tuesday (Dec 31).

"It's a pity because he and Hon Jian were supposed to play in the tournament for the first time.

"This injury is really unfortunate for both of them, and they need to wait to compete in tournaments next year (2025)."

Haikal, who is currently ranked No. 21 in the world with Hon Jian, has also been ruled out of the Indonesian Masters (Jan 21-26) and Thailand Masters (Jan 28-Feb 2) and could be sidelined for at least two months.
