PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Ong Xin Yee is fired up to win a medal in the Asian Junior Championships next month after capturing two titles in the National Under-18 Championships.

Xin Yee emerged as the big winner after taking home both the girls’ singles and doubles titles in Alor Setar yesterday.

The 17-year-old justified her status as the top seed by easily beating fellow Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) player Oo Shan Zi 21-8, 21-11 in the singles.

Xin Yee then continued her superb form when she combined with Lim Zhi Shin to come out on top over another BAM pair Clarissa San-Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan 21-19, 13-21, 21-10 in the doubles.

The double triumph has given Xin Yee a timely boost ahead of the Asian Junior meet from June 28-July 7 in Bali.

“I’m thrilled to have clinched both titles here,” said Xin Yee.

“My aim now is to win a medal at the upcoming Asian Juniors. I’m focused on improving my physical strength and consistency of my shots.”

National junior head coach Jeffer Rosobin was pleased with the progress shown by Xin Yee ahead of the Asian Juniors.

“Winning two titles is good for Xin Yee’s preparations for the meet. I hope she can continue her form,” said Jeffer.

“She has been getting fitter and faster on court. I hope she stays focused and remains consistent after this.”

Eoon Xi Quan was the last Malaysian to win a medal in the girl’s singles in the Asian Juniors when she claimed a bronze in 2017 while Pearly Tan-Toh Ee Wei were the last Malaysian pair to win a medal in the girls’ doubles when they took home silver in 2018.

Meanwhile, BAM’s Roslee Razeeq Daniel captured the boys’ singles title after defeating teammate Ayu Fu Sheng 21-17, 17-21, 21-8.

In the boys’ doubles, Kelantan’s Wan Latif Hakimi Wan Khalid-Yeap Phoi Lin fought hard to beat BAM’s Damien Ling-Heng Zi Hin 20-22, 21-18, 21-16 to claim the title.
