No-go for Pei Kee-Yeen Yuan in Ningbo as they miss main draw of Asian C’ships

PETALING JAYA: Women’s doubles shuttlers Go Pei Kee-Low Yeen Yuan missed a good opportunity to progress to the main draw of the Asian Championships after faltering in the qualifying round.

Pei Kee-Yeen Yuan, who were competing in their first Super 1000-level competition, suffered a disappointing 8-21, 22-20, 10-21 defeat to Hong Kong’s Fan Ka Yan-Yau Mau Ying in their opening Group D match in Ningbo, China, yesterday.

The youngsters fought back well to win the second game after tamely going down in the first to their opponents, who are ranked 114th in the world, but could not maintain their form in the decider.

World No. 80 Pei Kee-Yeen Yuan did easily beat Sri Lanka’s Isuri Attanayake-Sithumi De Silva 21-0, 21-6 in their second group match but it was merely a consolation win as only the group winners will qualify for the main draw.

It was frustration for Pei Kee-Yeen Yuan, who are still searching for a breakthrough after combining last year.

Malaysia’s challenge in the women’s doubles, though, is not over as national No. 1 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah and independent duo Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien are set to play in the first round today against Japan’s Mayu Matsumoto-Wakana Nagahara and South Korea’s Jeong Na-eun-Kim Hye-jeong respectively.

Meanwhile, men’s doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun will also be in action today.

In the mixed doubles, Malaysia will be represented by Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing and youngsters Yap Roy King-Valeree Siow.

Independent players Lee Zii Jia and Goh Jin Wei will be the country’s sole representatives in the men’s and women’s singles respectively.

World No. 11 Zii Jia was the last Malaysian to win the title in 2022.
