Tang Jie-Ee Wei send C’wealth champions Terry-Jessica packing

PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei added another quality scalp in their list as they downed Commonwealth Games champions Terry Hee-Jessica Tan of Singapore in the Swiss Open first round in Basel on Wednesday.

As expected, Tang Jie-Ee Wei did not have it easy against the husband and wife combination before clinching a 21-12,19-21, 21-15 win in 57 minutes.

Although Terry-Jessica have yet to break into the top 10, as their highest ranking is No. 13 they occupied last year, the Singaporeans are capable of beating the elite pairs on their day.

They had also denied Malaysia from winning gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022 by eliminating Tan Kian Meng-Pai Pei Jing in the semi-finals before overcoming Marcus Ellis-Lauren Smith of England to emerge champions.

Terry-Jessica, who won the Indian Masters in November, started the year well by reaching the semi-finals at the Malaysian Open in January.

Tang Jie-Ee Wei, the world No. 9, have already made significant breakthroughs in their 16-month career as they have beaten eight of the top 10 pairs at least once.

At the All England last week, Tang Jie-Ee Wei defeated Thailand’s world No. 6 Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai but stumbled against Robin Tabeling-Selena Piek of Holland in the second round.

Tang Jie-Ee Wei play India’s K. Sathish Kumar-V. Aadya, who beat another Malaysian pair Yap Roy King-Veleree Siow 21-18, 11-21, 21-19, in their next match.

Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See also advanced to the second round after beating compatriots Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin 21-17, 21-16 in their opening match and will meet Hidori Midorikawa-Natsu Saito next.

Another independent pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie were also through after beating Kenneth Choo-Gronya Somerville of Australia 21-19 21-16 to book a meeting against Hiroki Nishi-Akari Sato of Japan in the second round.
