Indian women's team beat Thailand 3-2 to capture historic Asia Team Championships title


Teenager Anmol Kharb stunned Thailand's Pornpicha Choeikeewong 21-14, 21-9 to give India a 3-2 win over Thailand in the final of the women's team event in the Asia Team Championships.

SHAH ALAM: The Indian women's team led by 2019 world champion P. V. Sindhu created history by lifting the Asia Team Championships title on Sunday (Feb 18) with a thrilling 3-2 win over Thailand.

Sindhu gave her team a great start by sweeping aside Supanida Katethong 21-12, 21-12 in the first singles in the final at the Setia City Convention Center.

Doubles pair Treesa Jolly-Gayathri Gopichand stunned Jongkolphan Kittitharakul-Rawinda Prajongjai 21-16, 18-21, 21-16 to make it 2-0 for India.

Busanan Ongbamrungphan reignited Thailand's hopes with a 21-11, 21-14 win over Ashmita Chaliha.

Thai sisters Benyapa Aimsaard-Nuntakarn Aimsaard then levelled the scores by easily beating Priya Konjengbam-Shruti Mishra 21-11 and 21-9.

17-year-old Anmol Kharb then emerged as India's hero when she toppled Pornpicha Choeikeewong 21-14, 21-9 in the deciding match.

It was India's first-ever women's team title.
