Liu Ying calls on badminton lovers to take part in charity event

PETALING JAYA: In an effort to raise public awareness about the physical and mental wellbeing of women, former national shuttler Goh Liu Ying has joined forces with charity organisation Herstory to launch the first-ever Herstory Fitfest x GLY 3v3 Badminton Tournament.

This will be Liu Ying’s first return to the badminton court following maternity leave, where she takes on the role of the driver and initiator.

Liu Ying, who retired from competitive action last year, believes that this collaboration is beneficial for all parties involved.

“Since we started organising the GLY 3v3 badminton tournament last year, our goal has always been to promote the enjoyable 3v3 badminton, and at the same time contribute to social welfare,” said the 34-year-old Liu Ying, who won a silver medal with Chan Peng Soon at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

“Badminton was once my profession, and it has brought me a lot of joy and satisfaction.

“We welcome everyone to participate in this charity badminton competition, regardless of skill level, as long as you love the sport.”

This event is scheduled to take place at the Sports Hub in Austin Heights, Johor Baru from March 2-3, featuring different categories – men’s, mixed and teen’s triples – to encourage broader participation.

In addition to badminton competitions, a health festival will be held, offering participants the opportunity to gain insights into women’s health and wellness through hands-on experiences and interactive activities.

A range of charitable activities – free oral checks and health screenings – and game booths will be available at the venue.

The registration deadline is on Feb 25 and the winner in each category will bring home RM2,000, with the runners-up earning RM1,000 and the third-place finishers securing RM300.
