KUALA LUMPUR: Men’s singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong has pulled out of the Indian Open from Jan 16-21 in New Delhi after suffering a muscle tear in his back.

Tze Yong was forced to retire from his first round match against Japan’s Koki Watanabe in the Malaysian Open on Wednesday while trailing 8-12 following intense pain in his back.

The world No. 15 underwent a scan after the match and Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) general secretary Datuk Kenny Goh confirmed the details of the injury.

"I was informed by men’s singles coach Datuk Tey Seu Bock that Tze Yong has a muscle tear in his back," said Kenny.

"He cannot play in the Indian Open. For now, the coaches will monitor his condition first before deciding if he can compete in the Indonesian Masters (Jan 23-28)."
