$mile, Sindhu, though your year has been tough

PETALING JAYA: India’s women’s singles shuttler P. V. Sindhu (pic) has something to smile about after a disappointing year by her own high standards.

Sindhu has once again made the Forbes list as one of the highest paid female athletes in the world this year.

The 2019 world champion is ranked 16th on the list after earning US$7.1 mil (RM33.1 million).

Sindhu has frequently been among the highest earning female athletes in the world, thanks to her marketability.

She broke into the top 10 with US$8.5mil (RM40mil) in 2018 and was placed seventh overall.

The Indian shuttler also earned US$7.1mil (RM33.1mil) and was 12th on the list last year.

Sindhu is currently ranked No. 11 in the world after going through a tough year.

The 28-year-old did not manage to win any titles, with her best result coming in the Spain Masters in April where she finished runner-up to Indonesia’s world No. 7 Gregoria Mariska.

Sindhu, though, looked close to returning to her best form when she reached back-to-back semi-finals in the Arctic and Denmark Opens in October.

Her progress was cruelly curtailed by a left knee injury, which she picked up in the French Open.

Sindhu is recovering from the injury and will thus miss the Malaysian Open from Jan 9-14 in Bukit Jalil.
