Vittinghus tunes up for his swan song on happy hunting ground

PETALING JAYA: The upcoming Norwegian International from Nov 9-12 will mark the final competitive appearance for Denmark’s men’s singles badminton player, Hans-Kristian Vittinghus.

The 37-year-old Vittinghus has dropped a bombshell by posting a heartfelt retirement message on social media on Wednesday.

Vittinghus, who once reached his career-high No. 8 in January 2015, witnessed a significant decline in his world rankings and is currently ranked No. 56.

He suffered early-round exits in all seven tournaments that he competed in so far this year.

His best performance was reaching the second round of the Indian Open in January and German Open in March where he went down fighting to Singaporean Loh Kean Yew and Li Shifeng of China respectively.

Vittinghus believed that it was the right time and decision to retire now, and has started venturing into new roles.

He and his compatriot Anders Antonsen have started a YouTube podcast called ‘’The Badminton Experience’’ in January last year, where they talk about different topics on badminton, invite other badminton players as guests and host Q&A sessions.

Vittinghus, who claimed the Norwegian International title in 2006, 2009 and 2010, has decided to officially end his competitive career in his happy hunting ground, Norway.

“What an emotional day for me, having my final training at the national centre after being part of the programme for the past 18 years!” posted Vittinghus on social media.

“Huge, huge thanks to everyone who showed up – it was overwhelming and I’m sorry I couldn’t say more words to thank you all, but it was simply not possible to speak without crying.

“No doubt in my mind that the timing is right and I have already begun my transition into my new role(s) and I’m enjoying it a lot!

“My international career is not completely over yet though, as I am planning to play the Norwegian International in November as my final international tournament.

“For now, just a big, big thanks for the amazing farewell today (on Thursday) and for 18 years of great teamwork with my colleagues, coaches and support staff present and past.

“Many of whom I can also call great friends!

“Without all of you, I would never have been in this position and I’m forever grateful to all of you.”
