‘Untouchable’ Se-young makes Jin Wei look like a novice but not all’s lost

PETALING JAYA: Goh Jin Wei (pic) was determined to make an impression against An Se-young in Copenhagen but the South Korean had once again demonstrated why she is the hottest player in the women’s singles scene this year.

Independent coach Nova Armada had firmly believed that Jin Wei could at least steal a game from Se-young but the world No. 1’s performance was impeccable and it made the Malaysian look like a novice despite her efforts.

Jin Wei’s campaign ended after Se-young notched a 21-12, 21-14 win in 35 minutes but the Malaysian probably had the consolation she was able to last the match with any physical discomfort.

Nova said that Se-young was at a level of her own that every player on the circuit has been struggling to keep pace with her, but he believes Jin Wei can only get better.

“Our aim this is to take at least one game but Se-young is looking almost untouchable at this point of time and there was no chance to shake her,” said Nova.

“But Jin Wei made a match of it and managed to play right through the end.

“She did not struggle physically and did not give up. If she can continue like this, it will be easier for her to improve.

“Jin Wei now has the stamina and is braver on court, and she was able to give some resistance but we have to admit she was no match for Se-young.

“My target is for Jin Wei to achieve her full potential by December and we can see better results.”

After facing the storm in Copenhagen, Jin Wei will be hoping to sail on calmer waters and hope for better results when she competes in the China (Sept 5-10) and Hong Kong (Sept 12-17) Opens before the Asian Games in Hangzhou (Sept 23-Oct 8).
