Zii Jia topples fifth seed Jonatan to reach second round in World Championships


PETALING JAYA: Independent shuttler Lee Zii Jia made an impressive start in the World Championships when he defeated Jonatan Christie of Indonesia to advance to the second round in Copenhagen on Monday (Aug 21).

Unseeded Zii Jia defeated fifth seed Jonatan 21-13, 21-15 in a 39-minute battle in the first round at the Royal Arena.

He faces Canada's Brian Yang next.

“This (win) helps a lot to boost up my confidence. This is what I needed,” said Zii Jia.

In the women’s singles, Goh Jin Wei advanced to the second round after beating Vivien Sandorhozi of Hungary 21-18, 21-15.

However, S. Kisona failed to get past the first round after losing 20-22, 21-19, 21-13 to Pai Yu-po of Taiwan.
