Aaron finds the mojo with Khai Xing to bag U-18 title


PETALING JAYA: National doubles shuttler Aaron Tai smashed his way to his first double success in the recent Under-18 National Championships.

The 17-year-old Aaron partnered Kang Khai Xing to win the boys’ doubles crown and clinched the mixed doubles title with Chan Wen Tse at the Kedah Badminton Hall on Sunday.

Aaron-Khai Xing lived up to their reputations as the top seeds by defeating third seeds Goh Shao Tong-Ng Jhi Hao 21-17, 21-13. They reached the final without dropping a single game.

And after accomplishing his first mission, Aaronreturned to the court for the mixed doubles final after a 40-minute break and together with partner Wen Tse, they came from behind to overcome Khai Xing-Clarissa San 17-21, 21-17, 21-12 for the title.

Aaron, who clinched his maiden Under-18 national title, said the double victory had whetted his appetite to win more.

“Personally, I’m very happy to win in this competition, especially two titles!” said a delighted Aaron.

“My goal is to win international competitions next.”

Meanwhile, there was also double joy for another national shuttler Ong Xin Yee as she won both girls’ singles and doubles titles in the national meet.The 17-year-old Xin Yee fought hard to stun compatriot Oo Shan Zi 19-21, 21-14, 21-8 in the girls’ singles final before partnering Carmen Tin to outplay Chong Jie Yu-Lai Ting Cen 21-12, 21-14 in the girls’ doubles.

Xin Yee is hoping that the double win will be just the beginning of her achievements.

“I feel happy and proud because I can finally win both titles in a tournament after so long,” said Xin Yee, who had to settle for silver in girls’ doubles last year.

“Hopefully, there will be more titles to come.”
