Hang Yee-Eng Cheong nail third title since forming partnership in January

A job well done: Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong beat compatriots Chia Weijie-Liew Xun 21-17, 21-15 in the final.

PETALING JAYA: Independent men’s doubles shuttler Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong stole the limelight when they capped their fairytale run in the Mongolian International Challenge with the title.

World No. 70 Hang Yee-Eng Cheong notched a fine 21-17, 21-15 win over compatriots and world No. 99 Chia Weijie-Liew Xun in an intriguing all-Malaysian final match at the National Sport Complex in Ulaanbaatar yesterday.

It was their third title since forming their partnership in January.

Hang Yee, who had left the national squad last December, was pleased with their achievements and hopes to maintain their fine form.

“We are very happy to win our third title,” said Hang Yee.

“We will keep this momentum going and look forward to the upcoming tournaments.

“However, we still need to improve on our consistency and physical conditioning.

“We will go back and discuss with coach Rosman (Razak) on the tournaments we will participate in.”

Hang Yee-Eng Cheong are in hot form as they have reached their fifth consecutive final appearance after claiming the Slovenia and Austrian Open titles before finishing runners-up in the Maldives and China International Challenges last month.

With consistent performance and results, Hang Yee-Eng Cheong are currently on the right track to achieve their goal of breaking into the top 40 in the world rankings.

Meanwhile, national men’s doubles pair Weijie-Liew Xun can still walk tall despite having to settle for silver.

Reaching the final was a breakthrough for them in an individual tournament because it was their maiden final appearance after reaching the semi-finals in the Estonia International Challenge in January.

They also performed well to stun Thailand’s world No. 54 Tanadon Punpanich-Wachirawit Sothon 21-12, 21-16 in the last eight on Friday.

Weijie formed a new partnership with Liew Xun in December last year after his previous partner Hang Yee opted to quit as a national shuttler.
