Women shuttlers suffer shock defeat to the Philippines

PHNOM PENH: Malaysian women shuttlers went down to a shock 0-3 loss to the Philippines in the quarter-finals of the team event in the SEA Games in Cambodia on Monday (May 8).

Debutant and world No. 138 Tan Zhing Yi could not give her team a good start when she fell 22-24, 18-21 to world No. 184 Mikaela De Guzman in the first singles.

In the women’s doubles, the more experienced Valeree Siow-Low Yeen Yuan went down 20-22, 21-19, 24-22 to Alyssa Ysabel Leornado-Thea Marie Pomar.

Siti Nurshuhaini Azman then had to win in the second singles to save the tie but she instead lost out 16-21, 18-21 to Maria Ysabel Carlos.
