Soon Huat-Shevon through to quarters, Tang Jie-Ee Wei fall

PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie battled their way into the quarter-finals of the Asian Championships but high-riding Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei stumbled against Indonesian veterans Praveen Jordan-Melati Daeva in Dubai yesterday.

Soon Huat-Shevon, who finished runners-up in the Swiss Open last month, came from a game behind to overcome young China pair Cheng Xing-Cheng Fanghui 12-21, 22-20, 21-15 in the second round yesterday.

The independent pair has a fighting chance of reaching the semi-finals as they will meet Indonesians Rinov Rivaldi-Pitha Haningtyas in the last eight today.

However, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) pair Tang Jie-Ee Wei could not build on their good form when they lost to former All-England champions Praveen-Melati 23-21, 18-21, 21-15.

Tang Jie-Ee Wei would be gutted by the defeat and their failure to continue their fine form after winning the Orleans Masters in France three weeks ago.

Meanwhile, men’s doubles Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun’s comeback was halted after Kai Wun suffered an ankle injury in the second round yesterday.

Former world champions Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi had taken the first game 21-14 and led 11-3 when Kai Wun was forced to concede after his left ankle swelled up.

Wei Chong was out of action and did not compete in the European tournaments last month due to a knee injury suffered in January.

National doubles coach Rexy Mainaky was relieved as Kai Wun’s injury wasn’t serious.

“Wei Chong looked alright but Kai Wun was unfortunate as he sprained his left ankle. It started swelling up in the second game and he had to give a walkover,” said Rexy. “According to the physiotherapist, Kai Wun need to take about five days’ rest and he should recover faster.”

Independent men’s doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi also advance the last eight after beating Ayato Endo-Yuta Takei of Japan 10-21, 21-15, 22-20 in the second round.
