Badminton: Malaysia out of mixed team event after going down 1-4 to Indonesia in World Junior Championships


PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's campaign in the mixed team event of the World Junior Championships came to an end when they went down 1-4 to top seeds Indonesia in the final Group A match in Santander, Spain on Wednesday (Oct 19).

Justin Hoh gave the team hope of toppling the Indonesians when he beat Alwi Farhan 21-18, 21-18 in the men's singles.

Then, in the women's singles, Siti Nurshuhaini Azman fought hard to give Malaysia the second point but succumbed in the end to Ester Wardoyo 18-21, 24-22, 14-21.

Facing an uphill battle, the team needed men's doubles pair Choi Jian Sheng-Bryan Goonting to step up but the duo found Muh Putra-Mohd Rayhan a tough nut to crack and lost out 8-21, 10-21.

Women's doubles pair Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting could not save the tie for Malaysia when they went down 15-21, 19-21 to Meilysa Sari-Rachel Rose.

In the dead rubber match, mixed doubles pair Wong Vin Sean-Lai Ting Sean were outplayed by Rafli Ramanda-Azahra Dania, losing 15-21, 13-21.
