Cheers for Jun Hao, disdain for Jin Wei

PETALING JAYA: It was mixed fortunes for singles shuttlers Leong Jun Hao (pic) and Goh Jin Wei in the Indonesian International Challenge yesterday.

National men’s singles shuttler Jun Hao shrugged off the disappointment of losing in the second round of the Vietnam Open two weeks ago by marching into the last eight in Malang after a convincing 21-14, 21-10 win over Taiwan’s Chi Yu-jen.

It was Jun Hao’s first quarter-final appearance this year in an international individual tournament.

He faces a tough task today against South Korean veteran Son Wan-ho for a place in the last four.

Wan-ho had ended the hopes of another Malaysian Lee Shun Yang with a 21-8, 21-15 win.

“I feel good so far in this tournament. The match against Wan-ho will be tough for sure but I will give my all,” said Jun Hao.

It was the end of the road for two others, Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin and Ong Ken Yon.

Aidil succumbed 12-21, 14-21 to China’s Lei Lanxi while Ken Yon went down fighting 22-24, 21-19, 14-21 to South Korea’s Jeon Hyeok-jin.

Independent women’s singles player Jin Wei suffered a shock 16-21, 18-21 loss to Indonesia’s Ruzana Ruzana in the third round match.

World No. 44 Jin Wei, who had reached her first World Tour final in Vietnam last month, failed to reproduce the same form as she could not match world No. 229 Ruzana.

S. Kisona lost to South Korea’s Kim Joo-eun 18-21, 16-21. (Matches involving Malaysians)
