Liu Ying has no great expectations of new partner

Let's see how it goes: Low Juan Shen will be Goh Liu Ying's mixed doubles partner at the Vietnam Open.

PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles shuttler Goh Liu Ying will try out a different partner at the Vietnam Open but she is not expecting much.

The 33-year-old will team up with Low Juan Shen in the Open from Sept 27-oct 2 in Ho Chi Minh City.

The sixth seeds have been drawn to play Van Hai Pham-Van Anh Than in the first round.

In the same half are Indonesians, second seeds Zachariah Josiahno-Hediana Julimarbela and fourth seeds Dejan Ferdinansyah-Gloria Emanuelle, and Hong Kong’s Chang Tak Ching-Liu Lok Lok, seventh seeds.

On paper, Liu Ying-Juan Shen are expected to reach at least the quarter-finals but it all depends on their compatibility.

“Usually, it will take some time to get used to one another. We’ve been training together but playing in a first tournament is different,” said Liu Ying, who won the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games silver medal with Chan Peng Soon in 2016.

“I’ve played with a few others but it has not yielded desirable results, but let’s see how this works.”

Liu Ying went separate ways with Peng Soon last year and was teamed up with Ong Yew Sin.

She had to abort her partnership with Yew Sin as he was more focused on the men’s doubles with Teo Ee Yi. She went on to play with singles player Soong Joo Ven but he too was more committed to his singles game.

Peng Soon will also see action in the tournament with his new partner Cheah Yee See. The duo are in the top half of the draw with top seeds Rehan Naufal-Lisa Ayu of Indonesia and fifth seeds Moh Reza Pahlevi-Melati Daeva, also of Indonesia.

The other prominent Malaysian players in the fray are Cheam June Wei, Joo Ven, Leong Jun Hao, Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin, Lim Chong King (men’s singles); S. Kisona, Goh Jin Wei (women’s singles); Yap Roy King-Chang Yee Jun, Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah, Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Mohd Haikal Nazri (men’s doubles).
