Rexy pleased with progress shown by Pang Ron-Ee Wei

On the way up: Hoo Pang Ron-Toh Ee Wei have climbed up to No. 46 in the world rankings after notching good results in World Tour events.

PETALING JAYA: National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky is pleased with the steady progress shown by mixed pair Hoo Pang Ron-Toh Ee Wei.

Pang Ron-Ee Wei, who were only combined in June, have climbed up to No. 46 in the world rankings after impressing in World Tour events.

The pair have stunned several higher-ranked opponents with their fighting spirit and fearless displays on court.

Their best result came in the Taiwan Open in July where they reached the semi-finals.

Pang Ron-Ee Wei also made the last eight of the Indonesia, Singapore and Japan Opens. And Rexy is happy to see his charges’ justify the faith shown in them.

“So far, Pang Ron-Ee Wei’s results have been really positive. They could have won the Taiwan Open but perhaps they were a little overconfident and lost in the semi-finals instead. But overall, they have shown good improvement,” said Rexy.

The Indonesian also praised the pair’s hunger to continue improving.

“After they lost to China’s Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong in the quarter-finals of the Japan Open, they told the coaches that they needed to improve on certain aspects of their game and were determined to do so.

“It’s good that they themselves have identified their weak spots and have the commitment to become better.

“Now, with the coaches’ input as well, hopefully they can continue their upward trajectory.

“My targets for them is to reach the semi-finals and finals of more tournaments. Also, if they keep up their good work, they could even surprise us all by bagging a title,” said Rexy.

After this, Pang Ron-Ee Wei are slated to compete in the back-to-back Denmark Open (Oct 18-23) and French Open (Oct 25-30).

The 21-year-old Ee Wei will see more action before that as she will be participating in the women’s doubles with Yap Ling and mixed doubles with Tee Kai Wun in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) from Sept 16-24.
