Liek Hou wins 13th title to serve early Merdeka Day cheer

Well done: Liek Hou (back row, centre), posing with his teamates and officials after winning again in Thailand.

PETALING JAYA: The body is tired but shuttler Cheah Liek Hou continues with his winning ways.

On Saturday, Liek Hou lifted his 13th successive title after defeating Taiwan's Fang Jen-yu 22-20, 21-15 in the men's SU5 singles final of the Thailand Para Badminton International in Bangkok.

He had beaten the same player in the semi-finals en route to emerging as the Paralympic champion in Tokyo last year.

"It's great to win my 13th title but it has been a long and hectic season for me," said Liek Hou.

"I'll take a short break before returning to prepare for the world championships in Tokyo in November. It will give me two months to be ready.

"I'm fortunate that I had the physio team here from NSI (National Sports Institute). Thank you NSI, my sponsors and supporters.

"The victory is a gift for Malaysia as we celebrate Merdeka Day this month," he added.

Liek Hou also won the doubles title with Mohd Faris Ahmad Azri while Malaysia also made it a triple joy when Mohd Ikhwan Ramli bagged the men's WH1 singles title after beating Jeong Jae-gun of South Korea 21-23, 21-16, 21-19.
