ANOTHER tournament, another disappointing exit for mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie.
Despite getting off to a great start in the second round yesterday, the world No. 14 fell to South Korea’s lowly ranked pair Kim Won-ho-Jeong Na-eun. The world No. 99 pulled off a 10-21, 21-18, 21-17 win in 53 minutes.
It’s not the first time that they had let slip a good chance to move forward and naturally, they were frustrated by their failure to get a positive result.
The loss in Malaysia added to Soon Huat-Shevon’s early round woes in the Indonesian Open and Masters recently where they were affected by food poisoning.
Overall, their best finish this year was at the Swiss Open where they reached the final but failed to capture the title after being denied by Germany’s world No. 12 Mark Lamsfuss-Isabel Lohau.
Shevon admitted that their inability to achieve a breakthrough success in tournaments was really hard to take.
“We have tried again and again to improve our game. We even tried methods that we never thought of before. We gave our best in training and prepared well. So, it makes it even more frustrating that we keep failing,” lamented Shevon.
The 28-year-old acknowledged that they needed to change a few things to prevent their careers from stagnating.
“Moving forward, we have to push ourselves and prepare well for our upcoming tournaments which are all very close together,” said Shevon, who will turn her attention to the next back-to-back tournaments – Malaysian Masters and Singapore Open.
With the competition in the mixed doubles getting ever stronger, Shevon concluded: “Younger players are coming through and pushing us.
“We are getting older and it’s up to us to prepare for these types of challenges.”
