Injured Momota the latest to withdraw

PETALING JAYA: Already hit hard by the withdrawal of the entire Indonesian squad from the World Championships, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) have been handed further blows when world No. 2 Kento Momota joined the long list of notable absentees in Huelva, Spain.

The BWF confirmed yesterday that Momota will not bid for his third successive world crown following his triumphs in Nanjing 2018 and Basel 2019 as he is nursing a back injury.

Momota, who first sustained the injury during the French Open, was also forced to pull out from the World Tour Finals in Bali last week.

BWF in the same statement had hit out at the All-Indonesian Badminton Federation (PBSI) for their last-minute withdrawal, citing concerns over the rapid spread of Covid-19’s Omicron variant.

“BWF are disappointed with the decision by PBSI and regret that the withdrawal took place after the draw.”
