It’s the end of the world for Tang Jie-Yen Wei

PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei will have to forget about appearing in their World Championships debut.

The world No. 39 are not invited for the world meet which begins on Sunday in Huelva, Spain, despite Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying’s last-minute withdrawal.

Tang Jie-Yen Wei were supposed to be eligible by virtue of being the next-highest pair in the reserve list.

However, national coaching director Wong Choong Hann explained that there would be no replacement after the tournament draw had been finalised last Wednesday.

“We were told by the Badminton World Federation on Sunday that it was not possible to have a replacement once the draw is out,” said Choong Hann.

In Peng Soon-Liu Ying’s absence, the nation’s challenge in the mixed doubles will be shouldered by three pairs – Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie and debutants Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See.

On Monday, Peng Soon-Liu Ying announced that they would not make their eighth appearance as they will split up after featuring in the semi-finals of the World Tour Finals last Saturday.
